"Do not overthink it—there is always a buyer, just be patient. Refinishing is an expression and if you enjoy it, it does not feel like a job."
— Whitney Mitchell
Picture this: it's a warm Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas, and you're wandering through the bright, warehouse-style aisles of Painted Tree Boutiques. The air conditioning offers welcome relief from the heat as you browse past booths filled with handmade crafts, vintage finds, and artistic treasures. Then you turn a corner and stop. Before you stands a professionally curated display that feels different from the rest—sophisticated furniture pieces in rich, jewel-toned finishes, a carefully organized wall of paint samples in every shade imaginable, and gleaming hardware options displayed like precious gems.
This is Made New Furnishings, Whitney Mitchell's furniture refinishing business that has transformed over 400 pieces of forgotten furniture into treasured centerpieces for homes across Fort Worth, Texas. What started as a creative outlet has grown successful enough that her husband left his career as a fleet manager to join full-time, while Whitney continues in her finance project management job alongside the furniture business. Even her daughter caught the entrepreneurial bug, selling her own handmade glittery slimes and snow globe tumblers.
Whitney built a thriving family business while maintaining her full-time career in finance and raising three kids, but she is as humble as she is successful. Her story began with a need for healing during a challenging time.
How It Started
Whitney's furniture refinishing journey began in 2020, during the height of the COVID lockdown. She had recently welcomed twins and found herself navigating the complex emotions of new motherhood while managing her full-time work responsibilities remotely. She struggled with postpartum depression.
"I needed an outlet that I would enjoy, something for me that was different than my day-to-day routine," she reflects. During this challenging period, she began painting furniture. She started small, tackling projects around her home, painting furniture for family and friends. Each brushstroke was a step toward reclaiming her sense of self.
Whitney didn't think about turning her craft into a business until she stumbled across YouTube videos about furniture flipping side hustles. She and her husband were searching for ways to unlock financial freedom and this seemed right up her alley. "I instantly knew I could do it but was very skeptical if it would even sell," she says. With leftover paint and fluted trim from another home project, she refinished a dresser and listed it on Facebook Marketplace. And it sold, proving to Whitney that her eye for transformation could translate into a business.

Honing Skills & Growing Her Business
Whitney's approach was methodical from the beginning. She didn't take clients during her early learning phase, instead creating pieces on her own timeline and then listing on Facebook Marketplace when she was ready. What takes her days to complete today required weeks when she was mastering the fundamentals. This patient foundation-building allowed her to perfect her craft without the pressure of client deadlines.
Her love for the transformation process itself became the driving force. "Being a crafter at heart keeps me going," she reflects. "I enjoy taking something undesirable and turning it into something that someone loves and appreciates. It is truly a gift."
By the end of 2022, Whitney needed more space for her growing business. She decided to rent a 5' x 7' storage unit and quickly outgrew it. It turns out furniture can accumulate rapidly in the refinishing business. As her inventory piled up, she expanded to a 10' x 30' unit. When she needed even more space, she expanded to two side-by-side units. One for finished pieces and one for projects in progress.

Using Technology to Elevate Her Business
Whitney discovered Bristles AI through the furniture refinishing community. "I cannot remember her name at the moment, but it was another refinisher that happened to be posting about the new release from Bristles," she recalls. "So I just went ahead and gave it a try, and it's been a game changer."
That was in 2023 when the Bristles AI idea generator was first released. Since then, it's quickly become one of Whitney's must-have tools for planning and sharing concepts with clients. "I use it all the time, so it is definitely in my top five apps!" Whitney shares. Now, whenever she sees a piece on marketplace or encounters one in person, she tests her design ideas in the app and exports the winning mock-ups to share with clients.
First Look: Rekind Desktop App
Then, we had a surprise for Whitney. We've been quietly working on a new desktop app. While Bristles AI was designed to be a general tool for visualizing paint and customizing anything using photos, this new desktop app, Rekind, is designed specifically for furniture refinishing. Whitney's Behind the Brush feature was timed perfectly with our upcoming release, so we gave her an exclusive sneak peek!
Watch Rekind in Action
Rekind was developed after hundreds of conversations with furniture refinishers. Two recurring requests were for a desktop app and an easier way to compare hardware options. Rekind delivers on both. We've integrated powerhouse AI features for automating hardware resizing and placement. Now, testing hardware feels like the ultimate furniture jewelry shopping experience.
Whitney was excited to give Rekind a try. "It kinda reminds me of the Sims. You can easily add things. It's fun!" she says, while adding paint and hardware to her piece.
The desktop format particularly resonated with her workflow preferences. "I am a desktop user so this is great," Whitney explained.
Expanding Her Business
Whitney knew her storage unit setup had limitations. "As a buyer, personally, I would be kind of hesitant to show up at a storage unit," she reflects. "You don't get that grand feeling at a storage unit that you will if you had your own storefront." The solution came serendipitously in 2023 when she visited Painted Tree Boutiques for a paint wash. "As I'm walking back there, I was like, there are booths available," she recalls. A lightbulb went off.
By the Spring of 2024, Whitney moved Made New Furnishings out of her storage units and opened an official retail location at her local Painted Tree Boutiques. The elevated experience transformed client relationships. Recently, she brought a client in to see an in-progress nightstand. "It just provides a professional experience. She got to see all the colors. She wanted gold hardware, so I brought all of the gold hardware that I have to show her," Whitney explains. Whitney treats every client like a VIP, and it shows.
Having a brick-and-mortar location opened up new opportunities for Whitney, including becoming a Wise Owl paint distributor. With no other distributors within 25 miles, her booth now appears on Wise Owl's website as the go-to source for locals.

Finding Financial Freedom
Whitney and her husband have built Made New Furnishings into a thriving family business
What started as Whitney's personal healing journey has evolved into something neither she nor her husband could have imagined. Made New Furnishings became so successful that her husband was able to leave his job as a fleet manager to join the business full-time.
The business success has brought more than financial stability—it's created a powerful example for their children about what's possible when you combine passion with hard work. Their daughter has been watching and learning, launching her own successful business selling handmade glittery slimes and snow globe tumblers. "She gets to see me selling something there, and that just encourages her to find something she enjoys doing and selling it too," Whitney explains.
Today, Made New Furnishings has brought beautiful transformations to over 400 homes across Texas, showing that when you follow your passion and persevere through challenges, extraordinary things can happen.
Whitney's Advice for New Refinishers
Start Small: "I did not take clients right away. In the beginning, I just created on my own time," Whitney advises. Perfect your craft without deadline pressure.
Be Patient Finding Buyers: "Do not overthink it—there is always a buyer, just be patient," Whitney emphasizes.
Most Importantly: "Refinishing is an expression and if you enjoy it, it does not feel like a job—making money from it is a bonus." Maintain the joy in your work, and success will follow naturally.
